Full Description

Angkor Wat Temple is a temple in Cambodia and is the largest religious monument in the world. Originally built as a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Vishnu for the Khmer Empire by King Suryavarman II in the 12th century, it was gradually transformed into a Buddhist temple and the end of the century; as such, it is also described as a "Hindu-Buddhist" temple.

The South Gate of Angkor Thom is the most famous temple in the Angkor Archaeological Park and should not be missed. Located next to Baksei Chamkrong but you can still drive or walk through it.

Bayon Temple is a beautiful temple related to Buddhism at Angkor in Cambodia. Built in the late 12th or early 13th century as the state temple of King Jayavarman VII. Bayon is located in the center of Angkor Thom.

Thommanon is one Hindu temples built during the reign of Suryavarman II in Angkor, Cambodia. This beautiful small temple is located east of the Victory Gate of Angkor Thom and north of Chau Say Tevoda. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed by UNESCO in 1992 under the name of Angkor.

Ta Prohm is the famous "Tomb Raider Temple" used in Angelina Jolie's movie. There is an amazing tree that grows on top of a temple. Don’t miss this temple.

Banteay Kdei is a Buddhist temple in Angkor, Cambodia. It is located southeast of Ta Prohm and east of Angkor Thom. it is in the style of Bayon architecture, like the designs of Ta Prohm and Preah Khan, but it is smaller and smaller. The tree roots at Banteay Kdei are absolutely massive, and they’re taking control of the buildings.

Preah Khan is a temple in Angkor, Cambodia, built in the 12th century for King Jayavarman VII to honor his father. It is located in the Grand Tour Circuit. Starting with Preah Khan, the most of the temples are in ruins, but it's nice to see.

Neak Pean is an island temple in the middle of a small pond. It is better only after the rain. At the end of dry season, there is not much water left. Located in the Grand Tour Circuit.

Ta Som is a small temple and surrounded by a moat and enclosed by three laterite walls which are broken but the best part is the stone doorway being consumed and help in place by a strangler tree. Located in the Grand Tour Circuit.

East Mebon, The temple is not in a very good condition, but the highlight here should be the elephant statues on each side of the temple. Located in the Grand Tour Circuit.

Pre Rup is a great temple near the end of the big circuit. Funerals were held here, perhaps that is why the temple is so impressive. The temple at the top of the pyramid are in better condition, so be sure to see this one.

Banteay Srei is built largely of red sandstone colors. It takes 1-hour drive from Siem Reap, but it can be combined with a grand tour circuit.  The temple is extremely popular with tourists.

Beng Mealea was built as a Hindu temple, but some carvings depict Buddhist motifs. Its primary material is sandstone and it is largely unrestored, with trees and thick brush thriving amidst its towers and courtyards and many of its stones lying in great heaps. For years it was difficult to reach, but a road recently built to the temple complex of Koh Ker passes Beng Mealea and more visitors are coming to the site, as it is 77 km from Siem Reap by road. It was built during the reign of king Suryavarman II in the early 12th century. Smaller in size than Angkor Wat.

Lolei is the northernmost temple of the Roluos group of three late 9th century Hindu temples at Angkor, Cambodia, the others members of which are Preah Ko and the Bakong. Lolei was the last of the three temples to be built as part of the city of Hariharalaya that once flourished at Roluos, and in 893 the Khmer king Yasovarman I dedicated it to Shiva and to members of the royal family. Lolei was located on an island slightly north of centre in the now dry Indratataka baray, construction of which had nearly been completed under Yasovarman's father and predecessor Indravarman I.

Preah Ko ("The Sacred Bull") was the first temple to be built in the ancient and now defunct city of Hariharalaya (in the area that today is called Roluos), some 15 kilometers south-east of the main group of temples at Angkor, Cambodia. The temple was built under the Khmer King Indravarman I in 879 to honor members of the king's family, whom it places in relation with the Hindu deity Shiva.

Bakong is the first Khmer temple mountain of sandstone constructed by rulers of the Khmer Empire at Angkor near modern Siem Reap in Cambodia. In the final decades of the 9th century AD, it served as the official state temple of King Indravarman I in the ancient city of Hariharalaya, located in an area that today is called Roluos.

Travelling Tips:

Be aware that you must be dressed for visiting some of temples, Angkor Wat, Ba Phnom, Phnom Bakheng and climb the same temple and more. Your pants or skirt should cover your knees and the shirt should not be sleeveless (make sure your shirt covers your shoulders, not a bra) otherwise you will not be allowed in the temples.  Or up there is done by the church authorities.  Walking shoes are recommended and light cotton clothing is also recommended for the weather from March to July as it is very hot with high humidity.

The official Cambodia currency is Riel (KHR), however, US Dollar is accepted everywhere in the country and most prices are denominated in dollars.  We advise you to bring US dollars and remember to bring new and clean banknotes as old or torn banknotes will not be accepted in most places.  ATMs are available almost everywhere in the city as well and make it easy to withdraw cash in dollars.  Usually the exchange rate is around 4,000 Riel to 1 USD, so if you give 3 USD for something worth 10000 Riel, you will get back usually 2000 Riel.
